Alpha-GPC vs CDP-Choline

WHAT IS ALPHA-GPC?

Detailed overview

Alpha-GPC (L-α-glycerylphosphorylcholine) is a natural phospholipid metabolite that the body incorporates into acetylcholine and phosphatidylcholine. It crosses the blood-brain barrier with ~95% bioavailability. An acute-acting choline source – quickly raises CNS acetylcholine, hence among the "feelable" choline forms (vs. CDP-Choline which supports long-term baseline). Pre-workout mind-muscle benefit documented (PMID PMC4595381) – included in many pre-workout formulas. Supports phospholipid synthesis at the membrane level (PMID 8190709). At high doses, cholinergic overload (headache, brain fog, anxiety) → Magnesium L-Threonate can mitigate. Prescription medicine in Italy (Delecit, for vascular dementia) and a supplement elsewhere.

Safety

Side effects, stop signs, contraindications

Side effects · 7

  • Headache (cholinergic overload, typically at higher doses)
  • Nausea and gastrointestinal discomfort
  • Brain fog, mental heaviness when overdosed
  • Anxiety, nervousness from high cholinergic tone
  • Vivid dreams, sleep disturbance (especially with evening dosing)
  • Dizziness, sensation of low blood pressure
  • Sweating, increased salivation (cholinergic sign)

Contraindications · 6

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding (insufficient safety data)
  • Stroke history / cardiovascular risk: chronic high-dose use has been associated with increased stroke risk, medical supervision needed
  • Depression: excessive cholinergic tone may worsen mood
  • Concurrent use with anticholinergic medications (opposing effects)
  • Alongside cholinergic / cholinesterase-inhibitor agents (risk of additive cholinergic effect)
  • Caution with low blood pressure or seizure-threshold sensitivity

FAQ

FAQ

Alpha-GPC is a highly bioavailable source of choline, meaning it supplies the raw building block the brain needs to make acetylcholine, one of its key signaling chemicals. It crosses into the brain easily and provides a fast, short-acting boost to choline levels.
