Alpha‑GPC

Glycerophosphocholine, a bioavailable choline precursor.

WHAT IS ALPHA-GPC?

Detailed overview

Alpha-GPC (L-α-glycerylphosphorylcholine) is a natural phospholipid metabolite that the body incorporates into acetylcholine and phosphatidylcholine. It crosses the blood-brain barrier with ~95% bioavailability. An acute-acting choline source – quickly raises CNS acetylcholine, hence among the "feelable" choline forms (vs. CDP-Choline which supports long-term baseline). **Pre-workout mind-muscle benefit** documented (PMID PMC4595381) – included in many pre-workout formulas. Supports phospholipid synthesis at the membrane level (PMID 8190709). At high doses, cholinergic overload (headache, brain fog, anxiety) → Magnesium L-Threonate can mitigate. Prescription medicine in Italy (Delecit, for vascular dementia) and a supplement elsewhere.

Safety

Side effects, stop signs, contraindications

Side effects · 7

  • Headache (cholinergic overload, typically at higher doses)
  • Nausea and gastrointestinal discomfort
  • Brain fog, mental heaviness when overdosed
  • Anxiety, nervousness from high cholinergic tone
  • Vivid dreams, sleep disturbance (especially with evening dosing)
  • Dizziness, sensation of low blood pressure
  • Sweating, increased salivation (cholinergic sign)

Contraindications · 6

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding (insufficient safety data)
  • Stroke history / cardiovascular risk: chronic high-dose use has been associated with increased stroke risk, medical supervision needed
  • Depression: excessive cholinergic tone may worsen mood
  • Concurrent use with anticholinergic medications (opposing effects)
  • Alongside cholinergic / cholinesterase-inhibitor agents (risk of additive cholinergic effect)
  • Caution with low blood pressure or seizure-threshold sensitivity
