WHAT IS BACOPA MONNIERI?

Detailed overview

Bacopa monnieri (Brahmi) is the classical "medhya rasayana" (intellect-tonifying) herb of Ayurvedic medicine. Its actives are bacoside A and B (and derivatives), triterpene saponins. Multiple double-blind placebo-controlled human trials (RCT, 12 weeks, 300-600 mg standardized 50% bacoside extract) describe memory consolidation and reaction-time improvement, though the effect size is modest (Calabrese 2008 BMC RCT, Stough 2001). A standardized extract (45-55% bacosides) is mandatory for efficacy – under-standardized product is inert. Acute effect is minimal, 8-12 weeks of chronic dosing are needed to reach plateau. Common side effect: gastrointestinal discomfort if taken on an empty stomach → take with food. Anecdotally a short-term "echoing" or "slowness" sensation is also reported – a kind of serotonergic-slowing effect.

Safety

Side effects, stop signs, contraindications

Side effects · 5

  • Gastrointestinal discomfort: nausea, abdominal cramping, increased bowel motility and loose stools, especially on an empty stomach
  • Dry mouth and increased thirst (cholinergic effect)
  • Fatigue, sedation or a feeling of mental slowness, linked to serotonergic dampening
  • Reduced appetite or mild stomach upset
  • Headache or dizziness with chronic use (rare, individual sensitivity)

Contraindications · 5

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: insufficient safety data, avoid
  • Thyroid disorders: bacosides may raise T4 levels, caution in hyperthyroidism and with thyroid medication
  • Bradycardia and cholinergic drugs: additive heart-rate slowing, caution with beta blockers and calcium channel blockers
  • Peptic ulcer or bowel obstruction: increased secretion and motility may worsen it
  • Interaction with sedatives and anticholinergic agents: increased sedation or counteracted effect
