WHAT IS BACOPA MONNIERI?

Detailed overview

Bacopa monnieri (Brahmi) is the classical "medhya rasayana" (intellect-tonifying) herb of Ayurvedic medicine. Its actives are bacoside A and B (and derivatives), triterpene saponins. Multiple double-blind placebo-controlled human trials (RCT, 12 weeks, 300-600 mg standardized 50% bacoside extract) describe **memory consolidation and reaction-time improvement**, though the effect size is modest (Calabrese 2008 BMC RCT, Stough 2001). **A standardized extract (45-55% bacosides)** is mandatory for efficacy – under-standardized product is inert. Acute effect is minimal, **8-12 weeks of chronic dosing** are needed to reach plateau. Common side effect: gastrointestinal discomfort if taken on an empty stomach → take with food. Anecdotally a short-term "echoing" or "slowness" sensation is also reported – a kind of serotonergic-slowing effect.
