WHAT IS CHOLINE BITARTRATE?

Detailed overview

Choline bitartrate is the tartaric-acid salt of choline, the cheapest and most common supplemental choline source (roughly 41% of its weight is elemental choline). After absorption, choline is incorporated into membrane phospholipids, converted to acetylcholine in nerve terminals, or oxidized to betaine for homocysteine methylation. Although choline is an essential nutrient, the bitartrate form crosses the blood-brain barrier relatively poorly, so as a standalone cognitive enhancer human results are mixed: it did not improve memory in healthy young adults, yet in cognitively frail elders it slowed decline when combined with vitamin B12. It is often added alongside racetams (e.g. piracetam) to supply the cholinergic cofactor.

  • Hepatic fat metabolism (betaine, methylation)Moderate
  • Brain choline delivery (blood-brain barrier)Weak

Safety

Side effects, stop signs, contraindications

Side effects · 6

  • Fishy body odor at very high intakes from released trimethylamine
  • Digestive upset, nausea, diarrhea at larger doses
  • Increased sweating and salivation at excessive intake (cholinergic character)
  • Drop in blood pressure at high doses
  • Headache or low mood that some users attribute to a choline load
  • The bitartrate form crosses the blood-brain barrier poorly, so cognitive effects are often modest or absent

Contraindications · 4

  • Trimethylaminuria (fish odor syndrome): a choline load worsens the body odor
  • Avoid chronically exceeding the tolerable upper intake level (adult: 3.5 g/day elemental choline)
  • Caution in conditions sensitive to cholinergic load (e.g. some forms of depression)
  • During pregnancy and breastfeeding choline is an important nutrient, but discuss high-dose supplementation with a clinician
