WHAT IS PRL-8-53?
PRL-8-53 (methyl-3-(2-(benzyl(methyl)amino)ethyl)benzoate) was patented in 1972 (Dr. Nikolaus Hansl, Creighton University). A single 1978 double-blind placebo-controlled human trial (n=47, Hansl & Mehler, PMID 418433) described statistically significant verbal-memory improvement, enhanced long- and short-term recall, and modest motor-control gains; effects stronger in older and initially low-performing subjects. Anecdotally also used for language learning and vocabulary retention. Mechanism: cholinergic signal enhancement + dopamine potentiation + mild serotonin inhibition (per the original patent). **High doses can produce convulsive effects, anxiety, insomnia**. No follow-up trials since → thin database.
