WHAT IS VALERIAN ROOT?

Detailed overview

Valerian root (Valeriana officinalis) is one of the oldest traditional sleep and calming herbs; its main active, valerenic acid, enhances inhibitory signaling by positively modulating the GABA-A receptor. The root also contains GABA itself and acts weakly on adenosine and serotonin receptors, which contributes to its sedative, sleep-promoting profile. Clinical data are mixed: several meta-analyses (Bent, 2006, PMID 17145239; Fernandez-San-Martin, 2010, PMID 20347389) reported subjective improvement in sleep quality, while other systematic reviews (Taibi, 2007, PMID 17517355) found the evidence weak but judged the herb safe. It is freely available as a dietary supplement and is typically taken 30 to 120 minutes before bed.
