TUDCA (Tauroursodeoxycholic acid)
The taurine-conjugated bile acid derivative of ursodeoxycholic acid. It has randomized human data in cholestatic liver disease and cirrhosis. Its role as a liver protector alongside anabolic steroids is widespread but has not been studied directly.

WHAT IS TUDCA (TAUROURSODEOXYCHOLIC ACID)?
Detailed overview
TUDCA (tauroursodeoxycholic acid) is the taurine-conjugated, more water-soluble form of ursodeoxycholic acid, and it occurs physiologically in human bile in small amounts. Two mechanisms should be kept separate. The first and better supported is relief of cholestasis: hydrophilic bile acids displace hydrophobic bile acids that are toxic to hepatocytes, and improve bile flow. This underpins Heubi 2002, which studied prevention of liver injury during total parenteral nutrition, and Pan 2013, a double-blind randomized trial in liver cirrhosis. Song 2023 describes protection through the Fxr/Nrf2 pathway in an animal model. The second, actively researched mechanism is reduction of endoplasmic reticulum stress, which connects to the regulation of insulin resistance and inflammation (Liong 2016). This is an interesting direction, but no human therapeutic conclusion can yet be drawn from it. What needs saying plainly: in the bodybuilding community TUDCA has become essentially the standard "steroid liver protector", and that role has not been studied directly. There is no randomized trial showing that TUDCA prevents or mitigates liver injury from 17-alpha-alkylated oral steroids in humans. It is a reasonable inference from the mechanism, but it remains an inference. TUDCA does not make safe what is not safe, and it does not replace liver enzyme monitoring.

- Diarrhea and loose stools: the most common complaint, dose-dependent, and usually eased by splitting the daily dose.
- Abdominal discomfort and bloating, typically in the first days of treatment.
- Rarely nausea. Serious adverse effects are not typical within the studied dose range, and the safety profile is favourable.

- Complete biliary obstruction: bile acid preparations are contraindicated, and the diagnosis must be made by a physician.
- Acute cholecystitis or gallstone-induced biliary colic.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: human safety data are limited.
